Lithgow STP Biosolids Loading, for Lithgow City Council (NSW).

Lithgow City Council (LCC) own and operate a sewage treatment plant (STP) at Lithgow in the NSW Blue Mountains region.  LCC were concerned that the their belt filter press sludge dewatering unit was of unsufficient capacity.  They were investigating replacing it with a larger unit.  Unfortunately, LCC had limited monitoring data on sludge production and were therefore unable to determine the appropriate design loads for the replacement unit.  ASpect was asked to determine these design loads.  ASpect’s approach was to determine the solids loads using first principals.  The census data for Lithgow was obtained and used to confirm the current and projected future EP.  This tied in well with LCC’s expectations and the design capacity of the recently upgraded STP.  ASpect then used a simplified whole plant mimic and process modelling to determine the average current and future sludge loads after activated sludge treatment and digestion in the sludge lagoons.  Operating preferences were then used to convert these average loads into the peak design loads for the replacement dewatering unit.
