Bermagui STP is a nominal 6,000 EP STP that services the townships of Bermagui and Wallaga Lake. The area is a popular holiday destination, particularly in summer. School holiday periods, Christmas and Easter see an influx of tourists and a sharp increase in sewage flows and loads. Bermagui STP typically performs well but performance, particularly with regard to effluent ammonia nitrogen (NHx-N), often deteriorated at Christmas and (to a lesser extent) Easter. There was also a short term release of phosphorus during holiday periods, which must be countered by Alum dosing to prevent licence breaches. ASpect undertook a loading study, process unit capacity assessment and a more general process review. This highlighted capacity deficiencies in a few key areas such as aeration and RAS pumping and a number of other process shortfalls. ASpect made recommendations on interim solutions to overcome these shortfalls at minimal cost.
