Trouble shooting of Richmond RAAF STP (trickling filters) with SMEC for Department of Defence (NSW).

The RAAF base at Richmond is on aging trickling facility, one of the few left in the Hawkesbury Nepean catchment. The Department of Defense (DoD) suspected that the STP effluent quality was being effected by a trade waste discharges. They commissioned SMEC (and ASpect) to undertake a process audit to determine whether there was any impact the trade waste may be having on the process. A sampling and analysis programme was established in phases, each targeted at answering a specific question at the lowest cost. Recommendations were provided on the trade waste impact, STP capacity, performance versus loading (benchmarking), scope for operational optimisation, and long term strategic options.
