Capacity assessment and trouble-shooting for LMWQCC (MLE) for ActewAGL (now ACTEW Water) (ACT).

Lower Molonglo WQCC is a unique nutrient removal facility servicing most of the city of Canberra. Built in the 70s with it was one of the first sewage treatment plants in Australia to target full nitrification and advanced phosphorus removal. It later consisted of lime clarification followed by a nitrification (partial denitrification) reactor, clarifiers, contact filtration, dry weather flow balancing and wet weather overflow capture and storage. In 2003, a series of events led to sub-optimal performance. ActewAGL engaged ASpect to investigate the events, determine the most likely causes and suggest methods for mitigation in the future. The investigation involved a review of an extensive historical data set, capacity assessment of actual and optimal conditions, discussions with operations personnel, and a detailed report with recommendations. The recommendations have since formed the basis for amplification works.
