Concept design, detailed design, commissioning, operations model development and proving for Edmonton, Marlin Coast, Northern and Southern STPs (conversion of Carousels to EBPR and MBR) as part of the Cairns EPCM with SKM and CH2MHill for Cairns City Council (Qld).

Cairns City Council and Cairns Water undertook one of the largest sewage treatment upgrade projects in Australia. The “Cleaner Seas Project’ aimed at reducing nutrient discharges from all STPs, as well as providing more sustainable technology. There were four separate sewage treatment plants. The concept was to amplify these facilities and reduce the already low nutrient concentrations, while minimising chemical consumption, and maximising biosolids re-use value. The key strategy was the novel upgrade from Carousel to EBPR and SBR reactors. The delivery method was Engineering Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM), allowing client control throughout delivery. The project was worth in excess of $100M, and took seven years to complete. ASpect (with SKM and CH2MHill) were awarded this benchmark contract.
